Project Note

A working kitchen for a family of five and a long-time host. We replaced a cramped galley with an open scullery and a single twelve-foot island in honed Calacatta, kept lit by a row of unlacquered brass pendants the owner found at a Hudson antiques fair.

The Story

The brief was 'a kitchen for forty people at Christmas and four people on Tuesday.' We took the wall down between the old kitchen and the back porch, gained a south-facing breakfast nook, and added a scullery for the real mess.

The marble is honed instead of polished — it will mark, it will patina, and the owners are at peace with that. The brass will dull. The oak will darken. The room is built to age in a particular direction.
